I work full-time, and my dog is crated from 8:00am to 7pm. Is this too long? What kind of negative effects can this have on the dog?

That is pretty long for the dog to be crated. I'd say 8 hours should be the maximum stretch. Before leaving in the morning it would be ideal to exercise your dog with a good walk, playing fetch, or run around a bit to help tire them out. Regardless, they'll still sleep all day, but since they won't be doing much movement during that time their body isn't getting a workout. It seems like our lives are getting busier every day. I always feel so bad if I go a couple days without exercising my dog. If at all possible, test having the dog out for part of the day. Get a dog walker who can come home at some point, take the dog out, and maybe even keep them outside of the crate until you get home. If you don't trust your dog outside his or her crate then that is what I would start focusing on and training. I suggest asking another question specifically on that. One thing I'd like to know myself is if a dog will get in more trouble in the morning or afternoon if left out for that part of the day. |
